Collaborative Knowledge Develoment
May 12, 2008
Two, they develop collaboration skills and technology skills that are current at this time in our society. They learn to use online, shared document services. They learn to communicate in synchronous and asynchronous ways with a variety of students (I suggest you not let them self-select groups). This can be very frustrating for them… just like their jobs will be once they graduate (committee work anyone?).
Suggested guidelines for use in class:
- As a group, pick the 5 most confusing topics from the material for your designated exam.
- Share media in the Google document that will aid all of our understanding about the material.
- Pick websites that have simple explanations (and detailed explanations).
- Try to find material that is both verbal and visual and…
- If applicable, find a simulation or material that will allow us to have a phenomenological experience with the construct/theory/idea/task/etc…
- Organize the material so that it is easy to read and easy to use as a study aid. Usability is important! Remember that this is a public document and a variety of individuals may come to the site looking for knowledge.
- When you remix information from another site (words, images, simulations, etc.) you have an ethical responsibility to cite and credit the creator of the content. It will be much better for you to paraphrase how the material on a website can aid our understanding and then provide a link, than to copy the material.
- Plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the entire group, so monitor the groups work and help each other with APA style citations.
- Pre-Test Review! The last class period before the exam I want each group to share what you have done with us as a serious and engaged study session. You might want to create a presentation document to aid in this endeavor. I will be happy to help you copy handouts to aid any simulations (for example, you might want to recreate a classic experiment in class). Each document and presentation should improve over the semester as we learn from the previous groups mistakes.
How Tos and other stuff to make you a Google Doc expert.
- Videos to grow your expertise!
- The famous Google docs in plain English video (watch me first for inspiration)
- A very well organized series of how to videos from expert village (RSS )
- Google doc videos on YouTube… select from a variety of channels
- Text based help to make you an expert!

Here’s a nice photo of me with Billy Breedlove and Vicki Herrin (left to right). We recently attend the Appalachian IDEAS Network were we pitched our social venture at the 3rd annual showcase. Vicki and Billy presented the Psi Chi Foodbank project. A novel approach to solving our local probelms locally. Psi Chi students have been selling some of the items donated to the Community Helping Place thrift store on eBay… the idea being that some items are more valuable than what they would be able to fetch in the thrift store. The money is then used to purchase foodbank items in bulk. You can always know what we are selling locally (no shipping fees if you pick it up) by reading our our RSS feed… or make the communityhelpinng place one of your favorite sellers and check it when you log into your eBay account.
Thanks to all the Psi Chi students that have been working on this project. See me if you want to help.

Here’s a link to the ADCLI website. You will be able to get podcasts from the sessions in a few days. You can get last years (2006) podcasts now. Check the student showcase from Wednesday afternoon to hear (see?) NGCSU students.
Here’s a link to the blogs for the conference. More info should be made available all week as folks reflect and post.
In particular, take a look at the comments on the grand opening student showcase and the student panel discussions.
In addition, check out the resources blog site, sharing is good….

www.ajaxwrite.com — more toys for group projects
April 17, 2006
Check this out…group projects anyone?
Functionality
AjaxWrite is a streamlined word processor, comparable to Microsoft Word. To keep the program lean, we left out some obscure advanced features; you’ll find the functions you use most often, right where you’d expect them to be. (We’re still working on the spell checker.) You can import and export documents in all popular formats, including documents with graphics. The save function lets you save your work to a drive on your computer. Also, since you run ajaxWrite from your web browser, it is platform independent and can therefore be used with any operating system.

i d e a n t: Wiki Evaluation Methods
February 11, 2006
I’ve got to take a look at this and give it some serious thought. I’m teaching a lifespan developmental course this summer and I’d love to split the students up and have one group develop a pre-school project and another group develop a senior center project. A Wiki seems like the logical place for them to put up a proposal with research and a solid outline for success.
i d e a n t: Wiki Evaluation Methods:
Wiki Evaluation Methods (Updates at the end of the post) I’m trying to put together some criteria for the summative evaluation of wikis as a learning technology in higher-ed courses. Perhaps you can take a look at what I have just brainstormed and provide some suggestions.

Final Exam Schedule(s)
November 7, 2005
Scholars,
Here’s some info on Final Examinations. I’ll talk about all of this in class today:
From the Student Handbook…
Special Arrangements for Final Examinations
The final examination is a scheduled part of the class. When a student registers
for a class, he or she is registering for the scheduled final examination as well. It is
the student’s responsibility to be available to take examinations at the times scheduled.
Students are required to report for each final examination as scheduled except when
special arrangements are approved by the instructor and the department head.
No student is required to take three final examinations on the same day. Any
student with three scheduled examinations on the same day should contact her/his
instructor to make arrangements to have one of the examinations rescheduled.
From the Faculty Handbook…
5.23 Final Examinations
It is expected that all faculty will schedule a final examination for each class they teach. Non-traditional classes (internships, clinicals, etc.) that would not necessarily hold final examinations may be exempt from this requirement.
The date and time for a final examination is a scheduled part of the class. When a student registers for a class, he or she is registering for the scheduled final examination as well. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to be available to take the examination at the time scheduled.
Only in the case of unusual extenuating circumstances should consideration be given for allowing a student or a class to take the final examination at a time other than the scheduled time. When extenuating circumstances occur, the following procedure is to be followed:
1. A request for a change in the examination schedule for an entire class is to be submitted in writing by the instructor. The request is to include a justification for the change. Such a change requires written approval of the department head and the dean of the school. The entire class of students should sign a statement agreeing to the time change.
2. A request for a change in the examination schedule for an individual student is to be submitted in writing by the student. The request is to include a justification for the change. Such a change requires written approval of the instructor and the department head.
No student is required to take three final examinations on the same day. Such a situation is sufficient reason for the student to be granted permission to take one such examination at an alternate time. Students should contact the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs to obtain permission.
The Vice President of Academic Affairs has posted the final examination schedule on the calendar page. Check it out here…
